Lists like this used to change once a decade. This one changed twice in about a month. Here's the current top five, per Men's Journal's updated rundown:
2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Jordan/Kobe Dual Logoman Auto 1/1 — $12,932,000 (Heritage, Aug 2025). The most expensive basketball card ever sold at auction, full stop — game-worn logomans and signatures from the two defining guards of their eras.
2006-07 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James Dual Logoman 1/1 — $10,000,000 (private sale, confirmed by Card Ladder). The most expensive LeBron card ever, and it never touched an auction podium.
2023-24 Topps Mercury Victor Wembanyama Gold Foilfractor 1/1 Logoman Auto — $8,668,100 (this month). The eyebrow-raiser: an unlicensed card now holds the Wemby record, smashing the $5.11 million his licensed Prizm Black 1/1 rookie set before it.
2025 Topps Chrome Cooper Flagg Rookie Patch Auto 1/1 — $8,040,000 (Fanatics Premier, September). A card of a player who hasn't finished his rookie season, bought by PrizePicks to seed digital packs. The Dylan Harper and Kon Knueppel 1/1s from the same series also cleared seven figures.
2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron/Kobe Dual Logoman, PSA 8 — $6,500,000 (September). Two of the five biggest basketball card sales in history are LeBron-and-Kobe duals. The market keeps paying for the pairing.
Three takeaways we keep coming back to in the shop. First, Kobe's name appears on two of the five — his scarce high-end market is still setting records, not cooling. Second, the modern rookies aren't waiting their turn: Wembanyama and Flagg sit on this list next to Jordan and LeBron, in their playing careers, not after them. Third — and this is the licensed-card lesson — the single most expensive Wembanyama card in the world is an unlicensed one. Provenance and scarcity beat licensing at the very top, even if licensed product is where the week-to-week market lives.
Nobody shopping our shelves is buying an eight-figure card. But this list is the weather system everything else trades under — and right now, that weather is very warm at the top.
